Organization: Consumers & Alliances United for Supported Education

  • is a supported, post-secondary program designed to assist individuals with psychiatric disabilities to enter or re-enter college, technical school programs, or other post-secondary education programs.
  • assists clients in selecting and pursuing admission to the adademic or technical program of their choice, and helps students find financial aid.
  • helps to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness by substituting the role of the student for the role of the patient / client.  Students learn to manage their own lives.
  • serves these communities within the South and the Southwest:  Braintree, Canton, Cohasset, Dedham, Foxboro, Hingham, Hull, Medfield, Millis, Milton, Needham, Newton, Norfolk, Norwell, Norwood, Plainville, Quincy, Randolph, Scituate, Sharon, Walpole, Wellesley, Weston, Westwood, Weymouth, and Wrentham.

Students range in age from 18 to 60 and come from towns within the Route 128 area.  Individuals may choose a course of study from a variety of options and are encouraged to apply to the school of choice.

Population(s) Served: serves those with psychiatric disabilities interested in post-secondary education programs. Individuals do not have to be DMH clients in order to receive services.

  • academic counseling; assistance with admissions requirements; assistance with finding financial aid; problem solving- and coping skills; strategies to achieve success and control stress; intervention with faculty and staff upon student request; advocacy; assessment; information & referral
  • helps students obtain the following accomodations: Notetaker, Un-timed tests, test taking in a distraction-free room, extension of assignment deadline, preferential seating, use of tape recorder or other aids
  • helps make arrangements for: tutoring / coaching, substitute assignments, assistance with crisis while hospitalized

Eligibility/Criteria/Enrollment: Must have a psychiatric disability and reside within the catchment area.
